Steven Bolling
Steven F. Bolling, M.D. serves as Professor of Surgery in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Michigan and is an internationally recognized authority in mitral valve repair. He completed his undergraduate and medical education at the University of Michigan and trained in general and thoracic surgery at Johns Hopkins University. Since joining the University of Michigan faculty in the mid-1980s, Dr. Bolling has helped establish and direct one of the world’s highest-volume multidisciplinary mitral valve clinics.
Dr. Bolling is a pioneer in surgical mitral valve repair for patients with advanced heart failure and is widely acclaimed for his ability to treat the most complex valve pathologies. He has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and has received extensive NIH, American Heart Association, and industry research funding. He continues to lead a basic science research laboratory focused on mitral valve mechanics.
In addition to his academic and clinical leadership, Dr. Bolling is an accomplished medical device innovator and advisor. He is the co-inventor of the GeoForm™ annuloplasty ring, developed with Ottavio Alfieri and commercialized by Edwards Lifesciences, which reshaped the treatment paradigm for functional mitral regurgitation. He was also founder of Pipeline Medical (acquired by Gore), Millipede (acquired by Boston Scientific) and Laminar Medical (acquired by Johnson & Johnson), among others.”
